5 Smart Ways To Stay Fit This Winter
If you’re anything like me, you love winter weather… from the safety of your blanket in front of a fireplace while sipping hot cocoa. Chilly winter weather makes working out seem less than desirable.
Although hibernating through winter sounds absolutely wonderful, the changing seasons shouldn’t get in the way of your health + fitness goals! The holidays are the BEST time to amp up your activity level in preparation for all those yummy holiday treats. With the right attitude (and a few fitness tips) winter can actually be the best time to mix up your workouts, try a new class, and reignite your love of fitness. Bonus: Staying active can help beat winter blues.
Making The Most of Winter Workouts
Change Your Mindset
First and foremost – remain optimistic. Adopt an “I can do this!” perspective. The changing of the seasons is the perfect time to reevaluate health + fitness goals. Up the ante, take your health to the next level, and enjoy the holiday ride. Winter Tip: Start a motivation board. Print out motivational quotes, stretching sequences, healthy crock-pot meals, and write down your goals. Pin up everything in a place that is easy seen – like in your bathroom or kitchen. Add to your board, be inspired by your board, and let it carry you through the winter. Whenever you feel stuck, re-visit your board. Use it as inspiration to either whip up something healthy or try a new method of exercising.
Head For The Hills
Don’t shy away from winter sports. Throw on your favorite winter jacket and head for the hills! Winter is the perfect time to try skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing. [Don’t forget your helmet!] Your local sports retailer will usually rent the items you need at a great rate. Not your thing? Even walking in the snow is great cardio because it takes more effort. Grab the kids or your dog, pull on your favorite boots, and stomp the fresh snow.
Try Something New
We all have our go-to warm weather workouts. Why not use the change in seasons to try something new? Heated yoga is the perfect warm up + cardio + strength training activity all in one. Most yoga studios will offer a free class or week when you sign up. If you are a member at a gym, don’t fall victim to the treadmill this winter. Try indoor swimming, kickboxing, or Zumba.
Get Out & Play
Let thoughts of your childhood inspire you. If you don’t feel like exercising, trick yourself! Rarely does something like ice skating or sledding feel like a workout but you can actually burn serious calories during 1 hour of activity. Think of the walk up the hill as the workout and the ride down as your reward. Ambush your kids, neighbors, or the cute guy down the street with a playful snowball fight. Snow is heavy, so your leg muscles are getting worked just by running around in the snow.
Get Creative Indoors
Some days it’s inevitable to be stuck at home. If a snowstorm leaves you housebound, be prepared with your favorite workout DVD, free online yoga, or body weight exercises. Try doing calf raises up and down the stairs or just put on your favorite music and dance.
